1. Introduction

Viscoelastic foam, also known as memory foam, is widely used as absorbent in bedding products for its shape memory capability and energy absorption ability. VE mattresses and pillows mould to the shape of your body evenly distributing your body’s pressure and giving improved circulation. This reduces the need to toss and turn in bed improving the quality of your sleep. Clinical studies have shown that an average turning of 80-100 times per night would reduce to 17-20 times on a viscoelastic mattress.

MDI based pneumatic foam and TDI based conventional VE foam currently on the market lack air permeability due to their compact structure, which fails to release body heat and easy to accumulate moisture. After a long time using, the products are prone to humidity, bacteria and mites, causing some users to have physical discomfort and some allergic symptoms harmful to human health.

Puranol VE1007 is a special polyether polyol for MDI based breathable viscoelastic foam, which is different from MDI based pneumatic viscoelastic foam. Based on VE10007, the foam will have superior airflow performance and compressed variable qualitative properties.

1. Airflow Performance Test

The foam based on VE1007 has fine cells, good airflow performance and soft hand feeling, which is widely used in the production of pillows and mattresses. We cut the foam open and test its air permeability. It can be found from the test:

- The conventional pneumatic VE foam is almost airtight due to the close cells inside the foam.

- VE foam based on VE1007 has superior airflow performance, which is incomparable to the pneumatic VE foam and also better than that of competitors.

- VE foam based on VE1007 has low requirements for silicone surfactant, and its outstanding airflow performance enables it to pass compression set testing.
